OAKWOOD IS DARK November 25th.
CAL / USC pool was 53% subscribed hence only paid $35.78 to two winners – Anna Stevenson and Geoff Zimmerman. Two other winning squares were empty so the $ went to Lafayette Rotary.

Alicia Cragholm and Dino Riggio were presented with their red badges and welcomed into Lafayette Rotary.

Tiffany Sullivan from Stanley School was presented a $500.00 check to defray cost of a needy student for the annual Washington, DC trip. She said for some students this would be their first airline trip.

Mike Heller phoned Jay Lifson [got voice mail] so all shouted congratulations to Jay on his becoming a grandfather.

Geoff and District Governor Karl Diekman presented Budd MacKenzie with an HONORARY PAUL HARRIS FELLOW for his outstanding work in Afghanistan. Budd will be our speaker on October 28.
Speaker - Karl Diekman District Governor asked us to imagine photos of his personal and Rotary life through the years. He graduated high school in Seminole, Florida in 1967 and after a stint in the Navy he returned to Seminole and married Hiromi [Romi] Terashima on December 12, 1970. In 1972, after extended travel, living and working in Japan, he and Romi settled in Seminole.
Karl read Gail Sheehy’s book Passages in 1978 and that influenced his life.
Karl began a career in the fire service with the Treasure Island Fire Department In 1981 he became Fire Chief of the  Belleair Bluffs Fire Department and with the recommendation of Mayor J. Wilson Reed and PDG Jerry Hubble (D6950) joined the Rotary Club of Belleair Bluffs in 1982.
He served as President of the Rotary Club of Belleair Bluffs in 1986/87. Hosting a GSE Team leader and his wife from Kyushu, Japan served as an early introduction to Rotary’s international purpose. In 1987 he moved to California as Fire Chief in Ramona, joined the Rotary Club of Ramona (D 5340), served on committees, and was President in 1990/91 and participated in many Rotary programs in nearby Baja California.
In 1992 he became the Fire Chief for the Dougherty Regional Fire Authority in San Ramon and joined the Rotary Club of Dublin (D 5170). he served in a number of leadership posts, including President  .
In 2001 as Fire Chief of Woodland, he  joined the Rotary Club of Woodland. In 2006 he retired from the Woodland Fire Department.
He and Romi have traveled throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia where they enjoyed the fellowship of Rotary, making up at many clubs. Karl reminded us of the 2010-2011 theme Building Communities-Bridging Continents

One-day House of Friendship passes available

Rotarians who live near New Orleans may purchase a special one-day House of Friendship pass good only for Saturday, 21 May, during the 2011 RI Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

The one-day passes were approved by the RI Board of Directors during its July meeting. The House of Friendship will be held in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
