Official Weekly Bulletin of the Rotary Club of Lafayette, CA
November 10, 2011 | VOL 66 | ISSUE 19

President Troy Feddersen opened the meeting today.

Dick Holt gave the thought for the day in honor Veterans’ Day

Also joining us was guest Brendan McEntee and Gary Smith, today’s speaker.

Club members who were veterans stood to be recognized. These included Dick Holt, Bud Moulthrop, Dan Baker, Jim Jorgenson, Peggy Harbeth, and Bob Aguilar.

Troy announced information on the Rotary Reno trip.

John Sherry reported that Tom Henry was in the hospital and would be pleased to hear from us. John also reported that the Rotary Day at the Races has sold out.
Terry Ring provided a Reservoir stage update and announced the opportunity for volunteers to help with deck installation. There will be a photo opportunity next Tuesday at 12 noon.

Mike Henn thanked those who worked as volunteer poll  workers on Tuesday including Mike Heller, Chuck Vogel, John Sherry and himself. It was also reported that the Lafayette road tax failed to win the necessary two-thirds vote.

Geoff Zimmerman began circulating the sign up list for the Rotary Holiday party on December 15th.  Jay Lifson announced that the Chamber was raising money for Holiday lights this year as the city has declined to pay for them this year.

Fines and recognition:
Many members stepped up to donate money. In particular Mo Levitch and Maurice Williams made sizable contributions in honor of Veterans’ Day, as did Dan Barnes whose reasons to be happy was long and complex but did include fantasy baseball.
Today’s Speaker:
Our guest speaker today was Gary Smith. Gary has been bowling since 1956 in Oregon. He was on the University of Oregon bowling team that won the national college championship. He described how bowling has changed over the years, both the lanes and the balls. He developed the Egyptian god of bowling Ahmenhookit, which somehow managed to spook his bowling competition. Although he has had to give up serious bowling he is now a public speaker.

Today’s raffle was for $55.  Norma was our $2 winner and Mike Henn won $5

Five reasons to support The Rotary Foundation

There are as many reasons to support The Rotary Foundation as there are ways to do good in the world.

By donating to the Foundation, you support Rotary's six areas of focus, which help advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. Contributions to the  Every Rotarian, Every Year (EREY) initiative, are the primary source of funding for Foundation programs. By giving US$100 a year through EREY, you become a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member. read story
