Official Weekly Bulletin of the Rotary Club of Lafayette, CA
April 5, 2012 | VOL 66 | ISSUE 36

President Troy Feddersen opened the meeting today. Greg was our greeter and kicked off the baseball season with his thought for the day: “Play Ball”!
Joining us for today’s meeting were visiting Rotarians Ron Light and guests Jeremy Steel, Carla Goulart, Ian Kallen, Jess Kallen and Jack Peterson.

Announcements: Maurice Williams announce Saturdays’ Community Egg Scramble starting at 10am. Rotarians are invited to meet at the Lafayette Chamber offices at 9:15. Festivities will begin in the Plaza around 10am.

Bob Shusta encouraged club members to sell raffle tickets for this years’ Concert at the Res.

Dick Holt announced the Donor Recognition celebration for the Rotary Stage at the Lafayette Reservoir on Wednesday 4/25 starting around 5pm. There will be musicians and other entertainment, along with refreshments.

Debbie Cooper reminded us of the Golf Tournament on June 11th.

Troy announced the District 5160 Golf Tournament to support the Rotary Foundation taking place in Woodland on a date that escaped your note taker’s ears, probably due to Larry B making some inappropriate and distracting comment to Lay Lifson who were sitting at the same table.

Troy also announced the Napa Valley Bike Ride taking place on 4/21 at 11am, sponsored by the Napa Rotary Club.

Dino made an announcement to muster support for the Lafayette Rotary club Poker Tournament scheduled for April 28th, but looking like it will be postponed due to lack of signups.

Debbie announced that Robert Shaw will be speaking next week on the subject of “The Titanic”.

Fines and recognition:
Alicia was fined for having too many pictures of herself in last weeks’ bulletin. John Sherry gave happy dollars for being the new surrogate father of 3 Bichon pups. Debbie Cooper fined herself for wearing the same outfit as last week. Jay gave penance dollars for going to see tonight’s “Working Man’s Dead” concert without telling his wife until the last minute. Mo Levich gave promotion dollars to announce the Rossmoor Big Band playing at the “Farewell” show for the USS Iowa. Dan Barnes turned 44 but doesn’t look a day over 52 and gave rotisserie dollars for participating in the Fantasy Baseball rotisserie. Don Anderson, Mike Heller, and Chuck all gave happy dollars in a hurried frenzy reminiscent of feeding time at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Shark tank before Troy was able to successfully recapture the microphone and introduce our speaker.

Today’s Speaker:
Our guest speaker today was Carla Goulart, a fellow Rotarian form San Ramon, and representing the “Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation>

Sentinels of Freedom is a nonprofit group supporting severely wounded veterans as they come back stateside and helps them become self sufficient and integrated back into their local communities. The nonprofit works with veterans who are rated as 60% disabled or higher, and assists with housing, transportation, education and employment. Participants in the program must be willing to work; to take internships, and willing and able to pursue higher education. They must maintain a certain level of academic standard and keep a positive attitude.

Participants must also pass a background check and a credit check; they must go through a personality evaluation and pass an entrance exam. As part of the application process, the group conducts an interview with the participant’s commanding officer.

The group estimates that the cost of the program per participant runs between $60,000 to $100,000 for the 4-year program. The group relies on private contributions.

Today’s raffle was for $25. Bud Moulthrop won $2 and Dan Baker drew the gold ball and won the jackpot.

Banerjee is the first RI president to visit Afghanistan. His visit was made possible through the work of Rotary Foundation Trustee Stephen R.
