Official Weekly Bulletin of the Rotary Club of Lafayette, CA
June 13, 2013 | VOL 67 | ISSUE 45

Our Parsimonias President Chuck Vogel opened the meeting.
One of our fine newbies, Ben Bueller was our greeter, and a fine greeter he was(read: fine him!, just kidding)!
Guests: Jay intro'ed Jim Black of Mason McDuffie Realty Joanne intro'd Dr. Kelly Hood a dermatologist in Lafayette Ed Stokes intro'd a workplace friend, Les F.
Don Anderson intro'd Karim Chahadi who operates a limo service Dick Holt re-intro'd Al Webster, for his second or third lunch, and on his way to being an esteemed member of this club!
Mike Heller intro'd Kevan Healy, of Lafayette Closets, and Bud McKensey
Matt Shriner intro'd his dad Rick, and both were re- intro'd by Terry Ring since neither are presently members(keep within the rules fellas)

Res. Concert final tally is in and we did quite well financially. Check out the website if you're interested in the details The Rotary Board decided on its yearly contributions. See the Board notes from 6/11/13.
Rock the Plaza- Jay said Friday the 14th was the first one, and then for two more Fridays following. We are part of this project and we need Rotary volunteers for the event. Come one come all, Hear ye, Hear ye! And all that jazz!
Debbie Cooper announced that her first rotary Mtg as president is dark due July 4th. She also spoke of the Golf Classic in Rossmoor committee mtg. We again need help for all interested and uninterested parties as well! This is a big money maker for us. The need for sponsor's is great so each Rotarian should consider their own place of business or friends that might want to sponsor a tee sign ad ($125)or a booth at the tee box of a hole ($500)to tell 100+ golfers what they or their company does, handout goodies, whatever. It should be lots of fun if somewhat more sedate than Ed's tourney.
Gold Coast Players Chamber Music is on Sept.13; discounted tickets available for Rotarians Ron Wake, head of the largest Rotary Ski Race in Calif., recently won a raffle for a guided fishing trip on Lake Tahoe. It's an overnighter so lodging and fishing will cost. Talk to Ron and ask about his ski trip too.

Fines and Happy $$$
Dick saw Anna with a good looking young man at the Chamber Mixer and asked her about this apparent anomaly, and whether a fine should be melted out to the finemaster. And so the fracass began with barbs being traded on all sides and Dick paying a fine for insubordination of $10.
John Travalle handed out discount cards for W.C.Ace hardware, and it was then brought to our attention that Bruce of the Laf. hardware store was retiring at the end of the month. OMG, who's gonna tell us DIY morons how accomplish our honey-dos and then claim success for ourselves?!
Ben Bueller the newest almost a member, seeing the writing on the wall, gave up $50 for his B-Day and $1 for harassing Anna (seems a popular thing to do these days!). After Tom said Bill Ames missed this meeting to avoid being sung to for his BDay, we sang it for Ben.

1rst speaker was Bud Mckenzie, the guy building schools for girls in Afganistan. He wanted to extend special thanks to our Rotary club for its continued support of his ventures in Afganistan, and was just about to send 40 pallets of supplies and food to serve 150,000 meals for 9 refugee camps. He also mentioned that Kahlid Hosseini the author of "Kite Runner" and a new more recent book, would be speaking in December and to look for the announcement as it will sell out fast.

2nd Speaker: Adonal Foyle, Founder of the Kerosene Lamp foundation, set up to empower minority and impoverished kids to grow into healthy and well educated leaders. As a retired former NBA star player for the Golden State Warriors, Adonal hails from the Grenadines, islands in the Caribbean. The name of his foundation came from needing to use a kerosene lamp to get around his island at night since it lacked any form road lighting. Kinda like Upper Happy Valley Rd., you might say....or not! He is in the World Sports Humanity Hall of Fame and, after graduating from Colgate Univ. and JFK locally in Sports Psych, he started the Democracy Matters Organization to help kids understand that one must participate in a democracy for it to work.
His Athletic and Academic camps in the Grenadines and in Oakland, CA emphasize nutrition and staying in school. He believes heavily in community outreach and has written several children's books. This is one energetic, intelligent, and very big man. Yikes!
