Official Weekly Bulletin of the Rotary Club of Lafayette, CA
September 12, 2013 | VOL 68 | ISSUE 10

President Debbie opened the meeting. Troy was greeter and provided the thought for the day.
Guests introduced were Kathy Merchant and Suzanne Pestal with Las Trampas, our speakers, Chrissy Orangio and Mallory Bressier with Global Student Embassy (GSE), and Rocky Termanini, guest of Mike Heller.

Dick Holt had a birthday. Matt Shriner came up to the front with Buddy and Dick, for the presentation of Matt’s personalized Rotary shirt and rain jacket. Las Trampas was presented with a $1,000 check as a donation from our club. Kathy Merchant told us about the Las Trampas fundraiser event, the 4th annual “Walk n’ Roll” 1 mile or 5k walk/roll/run, which is on Saturday September 28, 9:00 to 1:00. You can register for the event online at www.active.com. A $25 registration fee also gets you a T-shirt, goody bag, raffle prizes, and live entertainment.
Larry Blodgett reminded us that Jay still was in need of more volunteers for the Art and Wine festival. Jay, who came in late, then also reminded us to sign up and help out. Bob Shusta updated the club on the Mexico fire engine project. The grant was declined by Rotary International, as it was deemed not to fall within one of the six required categories, one of which is community and economic development. Our club may do the project as a District grant next year, as we did with the prior fire truck project, instead of pursuing a Rotary global grant again.
Chrissy Orangio and Mallory Bressier, our speakers, told us about Global Student Embassy, or GSE, a youth leadership and eco-action program. Their mission is to empower your people to become informed, engaged, global citizen through the implementation of student-driven environmental and community improvement projects. The program started in Sebastopol, and now is in its sixth year, and operates in three countries: Nicaragua, Ecuador, and Northern California. Locally, a program at Campolindo High School, started in September 2012, has generated 500 pounds of produce, that has been donated to the Contra Costa food bank. Students have an opportunity to attend a spring break trip to Nicaragua. The non-profit has a fundraiser in Sebastopol, on Sunday 9/2013, 1:00 – 4:30.
Mo let us know about the Rossmoor Big Band dance on Saturday, 9/21, at 8:00 p.m. at the Rheem Theater, after the Lafayette Art and Wine Festival. Free dance lessons start beforehand, at 7:00. Tom won $2 in the raffle, and Bill, in his orange T-shirt, drew a blue marble for $5.
