Official Weekly Bulletin of the Rotary Club of Lafayette, CA
July 17, 2014 | VOL 69 | ISSUE 3

El Matador Gregg Vaisnor opened the meeting, and Mo Levich was our greeter. We were treated to a great meal from Jeff at La Fenestra.

Visiting Rotarians: Alan Mac was accused of being a visiting Rotarian,a badge less one as well.
Dr. Ron Light was in attendance.

Guests: Gregg's father, Ed Vaisnor, was in the house. It only took Gregg 30+ years to invite him!
Beverly Hayjek was present for her third meeting, intro'd by Jay, threatening to give another thought for the day. OMG, look out!
Mo L. Intro'd Bill Lu, a veteran from Orinda.

I WOULD LIKE TO CONGRATULATE THOSE ROTARIANS WHO PUT ON THE DELIGHTFUL USO SHOW AT THE RESERVOIR.  THE SETTING WAS GREAT, THE PARKING AND SHUTTLE SERVICE WAS EASY, THE SWING'N BLUE STARS TRIO
WERE GREAT AND THEIR RENDITIONS OF THE ANDREWS SISTERS' SONGS WERE
EVEN BETTER THAN THE SISTERS'  RENDITIONS, AS I TOLD THEM AFTERWARDS.
I MAY EVEN GO TO THE USS HORNET THIS SATURDAY AS THEY WILL BE PERFORMING THERE.

TO LISTEN TO SO MUCH OF THE WWII MUSIC BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES, GOOD AND NOT SO GOOD.  THOSE WERE SUPER YEARS, BOTH GOOD AND BAD.

THANK YOU.                                         Warren Jensen, Concord
                                                                 Veteran of WWII, Omaha Beach
                                                                  Normandy, Battle of the Bulge

Annc'ed : Dave Baker asked that we sign up for the Golf Tourney Committee and help out. FORE!!!
Mo L. Spoke of the 2nd Concert at the Res, the USO Show! It's gonna be the best we've ever had...also the first! Knuck, knuck!

Anna was recruited at the last minute to be finemaster, or "badge nazi" according to Alicia Cragholm.
Steve Faulk finally realized who Mo L. reminded him of, let's see now, a community organizer, yes that's it...Obama, or is it Ed Sullivan.
Mo L said he was so far to the right of Obama, that he's not even on the radar for resemblances there. Ahhhh!!!
Alan Mac once again was called on by the finemaster for being badge less and attending infrequently, being appropriately fined once again.
Diane B. Expressed her thrill at being able to bring her dad to the USO show and getting to know him and his history like never before.
Kurt Tiechmann was feeling sorry for his wife's broken nose that cancelled a long planned trip of hers.
Tom O'Sullivan was happy to be spending time with his son this summer.
Bill Lu told us that Ed Stokes is named in the Library of Congress for officiating in an Eagle Scout award. He's historical and hysterical all at once!
We sang Happy Birthday to Jeff and Norma, and Alan Mac asked if Norma made herself a cake....NICE guy!

Speakers: Don Anderson, born in 1933, became a lawyer who frequently visited Alcatraz to interview many a tough critter.., wishing he had eyes in the back of his head! He related some interesting stories in the line of "ambulance chasing" as a criminal defense attorney. He considers himself a community do-gooder, and has served on many local boards for the betterment of the society.

Michael Henn, with a repeat performance of his 1989 speech to the Rotary Club. He's been away from the microphone since then! Interests have been land use and real estate. He worked in county and city positions while his wife worked in the field of nursing. As a planner, he was warned that Lafayette was a bad place to work, using the byword "Process before progress" also called the "golden ghetto". But he gave them a try, due to the short commute, and lasted 18 years while acknowledging that it actually was as tough as they had said! He is now in retirement, enjoying studying historical homes and history, sometimes acting as a docent at historical venues(Pardee House in Oakland) as well as a fundraiser for these homes. Mike has been on the Alameda Co. Grand Jury for a couple of years.

Raffle: $2-Kurt Teichmann, Dave Baker won the jackpot of $65.

And that's all he wrote, fellow Rotarians! Buddy

Art provides a medium for building peace

Rotary members in California, USA, have been working with Hands of Peace to break down barriers and build dialogue between students from Israel, Palestine, and the United States. Kelly Mellos, an artist who uses her workshop to teach the visiting students trust and compassion, writes a powerful and timely post about the experience in Rotary Voices.

The Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say or do:
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
